Syria has called an
emergency meeting of the Arab League, in an attempt to reverse the
decision which saw it suspended from the organisation. The freeze on the
country's membership and accompanying sanctions received wide support
from the EU and the U.S. An overwhelming majority of member states voted
for the measure to urge president Bashar al-Assad to stop 8-months of
violence. But it also triggered new protests and attacks on the Turkish,
French and Saudi Arabian embassies in Damascus. Dozens more people were
reportedly killed across the country on Sunday in the latest wave of
crackdowns on anti-government protests. Author and journalist Afshin
Rattansi thinks the conflict in Syria's being fueled from abroad, and
could drag on for some time.
