With all the talk this week about the latest NSA leak by Edward Snowden and Obama saying not to worry it is just "
Metadata" this interview of William Binney (former NSA crypto-mathematician) in late 2012 is very important. William blows away any assurances that the content of communications is not stored, after all why would you sniff all the traffic on a line only then to sift through it just to keep the metadata. It would be like buying a rump steak only to remove the fat and then throw away the meat - data sniffing just don't work that way.
